Watch your home-country TV on holiday or as an expat. Bypass geoblocking, the optimal setup and legal routes.
The problem: geoblocking
Many national streaming services (public broadcasters, catch-up portals, etc.) are only accessible from within their home country. Outside the EU they are often unavailable too. Streams check your IP address.
Since 2018 (the EU Portability Regulation) paid services can be taken on holiday within the EU — but free public broadcaster streams are often still restricted.
🥇 Solution 1: VPN with a server in your home country
Connect to a VPN server in your home country → you get a local IP address → the streaming service thinks you are at home.

- NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN — all with multiple servers across countries
- Test: after connecting, check on ip-api.com whether your IP really shows the right country
- Some broadcasters can detect VPNs — sometimes a residential IP works better than a datacenter one

With an IPTV subscription or legal M3U sources that have no geo-restriction:

🇪🇸 Spain (Costa del Sol, Mallorca)
A popular destination for expats and holidaymakers. Home-country portals usually require a VPN. A good alternative: Spanish FAST channels (Atresplayer, RTVE Play) are free. Italian and English channels via IPTV-org.
🇫🇷 France
French TV is free via molotov.tv (a French IP is needed). Home-country TV via a VPN with a server back home.
🇹🇷 Turkey / 🇪🇬 Egypt
VPNs usually work, but some get blocked. Choose a VPN with obfuscation features (NordVPN, ExpressVPN).
🇺🇸 USA
A lot of content is geoblocked the other way around (US-only). With a US VPN: Hulu, HBO Max and Sling TV become reachable.
🇬🇧 UK
BBC iPlayer is UK-only — use a VPN with a UK server (tip: a TV licence is legally required, even though it can technically be bypassed).

⚠️ Legal tips
- EU holiday: paid national streaming subscriptions may legally be taken along under the EU Portability Regulation
- Public broadcasters: often "restricted outside the home country" — using a VPN breaches the terms of service, but consequences are usually negligible
